Plano, Texas, is one of the most prominent success stories of the American suburbs, having evolved from a tiny farming outpost into a global corporate powerhouse.

The Early History: From "Fillmore" to "Plano"
In the early 1840s, settlers began arriving in the area as part of the Peters Colony. The community was originally known as Fillmore (after President Millard Fillmore). When the town applied for a post office in 1852, the residents suggested the name "Plano," which they mistakenly believed was the Spanish word for "plain" (flat land). Ironically, much of Plano is actually rolling hills, not a flat plain.

The arrival of the Houston and Texas Central Railway in 1872 transformed Plano from a quiet village into a bustling regional trade center for cotton and grain. By the early 1900s, Plano was the "mule capital" of the region, known for its agricultural livestock and independent spirit.

The Corporate Boom: 1970s – Present
Plano’s trajectory changed forever in the late 20th century. What was once "the country" became the northern edge of the Dallas expansion.

Electronic Data Systems (EDS): In the 1980s, Ross Perot moved the headquarters of EDS to Plano, creating the Legacy Business Park. This move signaled the transition from an agricultural town to a technology and corporate hub.
The Telecom & Finance Wave: Soon, other giants followed. Today, Plano is home to the North American headquarters of Toyota, as well as major operations for JPMorgan Chase, Liberty Mutual, Frito-Lay, and FedEx Office.

Plano Today: A Modern Metropolis
Plano is now the fourth-largest city in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex (with a population exceeding 285,000) and is consistently ranked as one of the safest and wealthiest cities in the United States.

Key Landmarks & Culture:

Historic Downtown Plano: A vibrant district that preserves 19th-century architecture, now home to independent boutiques and art galleries.

Heritage Farmstead Museum: A 19th-century farm that remains as a living history site, showcasing Plano's agricultural roots amidst the modern skyline.

The Shops at Legacy & Legacy West: These massive "city-within-a-city" developments symbolize Plano's modern identity—high-end dining, luxury retail, and walkable urban living.

Plano ISD: The city is synonymous with educational excellence, with its school district consistently ranking among the best in the nation, which continues to drive high property values and familial stability.

For a firm like Shemesh Family Law, Plano represents a sophisticated client base that values both the city's rich history of hard work and its current status as a premier location for professional families.
